The last day of school!
If your child didn't bring their indoor shows home, you will be able to find them in the lost and found.
The last six weeks have been wonderful and I feel very lucky to have taught these two groups of kids. Thank your for all of your kind words and gifts. I hope everyone has an amazing summer!

Report cards and yellow workbooks went home today, please check your child's backpack.
Even though it is a day 0 on the calendar, tomorrow is a full day of school, both the PM and the AM classes will have school.
Today in Kindergarten, we sang songs, did our mini literacy centers again, used chalk outside with Mme Michelle's class, and had some extra center time. The AM class also had their last day with their reading buddies; the grade three students made cards to thank their kindy partners for a great year. It was sweet to see the students exchange cards and celebrate a year of working and reading together. As always, it was a busy for the kindy students and we had a lot of fun!

Hi 3B families!
Tomorrow your child will bring home their final Kindergarten report card. As this is possibly only your second report card, I want to take a quick minute to remind you that everyone has made progress this year. While a mark might sometimes look the same or different, know that the expectations to achieve that mark have gone up. It has been a true pleasure to get to know each and every child in the class and I am so proud of how much they have accomplished even in the 6 weeks that I have been their teacher. Merci.
Today, both classes had their teddy bear picnics! We ate a snack outside, read a book, and had a bubble dance party! I will update this post with pictures tomorrow :)

Hello 3B families!
-Tomorrow is our teddy bear picnic! If students would like, they can bring one stuffed animal to school tomorrow. If the weather cooperates, we will go outside as planned. If not, we will have our picnic inside. Mme Pelletier had a tradition of allowing students to leave their stuffed animals for a sleepover in the class. I would be happy to continue this tradition. If students choose to leave their toys in the classroom overnight, I will make sure they are sent home on Wednesday.
-I did not send the portfolios home today as they I realized that they are too big to fit in most of the students' backpacks. Please send your child with an extra bag tomorrow that they can carry their portfolio and some other work home. Thank you!
Inspired by the literacy centers we saw when we visited the grade 1 class last week, I set up some literacy centers of our own in class today! Students spelled out words using magnets and stamps, arranged images in sequence, and even practiced reading two simple books. Students put themselves into groups of 4 and rotated through the centers every five minutes. the literacy centers were a great success and the class asked if we could do them again this week if we have time. Today was the last gym class of the year for our classes and they have received some homework from M Trevor to do over the summer. I encourage you to ask them about this!
Below are some pictures from the literacy centers that we did today!

Next week, I will be sending student work home. Please be sure to check your child's backpack every night.
Sports day was so fun! The sports day committee did an amazing job of planning an indoor sports day on Thursday night and it was a huge success. There were different stations set up around the school and the students were free the cycle through the stations as they pleased. There was face painting, a dance party, parachute games, frisbee, hoola hooping, a huge dodgeball tournament, and more. We also went to Mme Michelle's class to watch some videos, had some oranges for snack, and ended the day with centers.
It was also great to see of you who were here to volunteer. Thank you for being a part of this special day at our school!
Below are the handful of pictures that I managed to snap as I was walking around.

Bonjour tout le monde!
Tomorrow, the PM group has school.
Sports Day is planned for tomorrow so please send students to school in Varsity colours (Blue & Red).
Today, I organized a visit to one of the grade 1 classes so that the kindergarten students can see what they are going to be doing and learning and next year. The grade 1 students showed us their literacy centers, the books that they are learning to read, and some math work that they've been doing. Afterwards, we talked about the similarities and differences between the routines and the organization of each class. It was a great experience and the students seem excited about everything they are going to learn and do next year!
Below is a slide show of pictures that were taken during both the PM and AM grade one visits.

Bonjour tout le monde!
We will be going outside for recess every day for the rest of the school year so please make sure that students are dressed for the weather. The forecast is calling for lots of rain and some cooler temperatures!
This week, the school is lucky enough to have Frisbee Rob helping to teach the frisbee unit in gym class. To start off the unit, there was an assembly, during which Rob showed the staff and student some great tricks and even bounced a frisbee off the floor into the basketball net!
We also did the first half of the June homework presentations. After each presentation, students were asked to share positive feedback and suggestions on how each presenter could do better next time. All of the students were very respectful and were excited to celebrate the efforts of their peers.
Below are some pictures form the PM class's first lesson with Frisbee Rob. They had a great time spinning, rolling, flipping, and tossing the discs around!

Tomorrow and Thursday, the students will be doing their homework presentations. Unlike with the edj presentations, there will be no show & tell aspect to these presentations, please do not send students to school with special toys and stuffies. We are having our teddy bear picnic next Tuesday, the 25th, and the kids can bring their stuffed animals to school on that day. Thank you!
The 3B students were busy bees today! During circle time, we practiced one of the sentences from our homework sheet, tried some of the local honey that we were given yesterday, had a fun recess outside, and had indoor gym. In gym class, the students played laser ball and octopus, two of the games that will be being played on Sports Day.
Today, the AM class also went to visit their grade three buddies in the portable. The grade three students read to their buddies and showed them the posters that they made about animal life cycles and habitats. It was great to see the older students passing on what they've learned to the kindergarten class!
In some exciting news, two of our class caterpillars are starting to make their cocoons and we took some time in class to observe and discuss the changes that we've been observing in our tiny classroom visitors.

- Reminder that the final oral presentations of the year will take place this week on June 19th and 20th. The homework sheet for this presentation can be found on the last page of the June newsletter.
- Sports day is on Friday! If the weather is too poor to spend the day outside, it will be postponed until Monday, the 24th.
Today, the kindergarten and grade 2 classes were lucky enough to have a Bee expert come visit and tell us all about bees! It was very informative and the students really enjoyed the presentation. The students even got to take a closer look at some dead bees using our class magnifying glasses. It was great to see the curiosity and excitement in the air today! Our visitor also gave me some samples of honey that I will share with the students tomorrow. *Please email me to let me know if you do not want your child to taste the honey*.

Bonjour!
Today, the AM class got the chance to present the two songs that they've been practicing to our buddy classes and family visitors! The students were a little quiet but did a great job! If a parent has a photo from the assembly that they would be able to send me so I can share it here, that would wonderful.
After the assembly we did centers, had recess, read a story, and wrote a journal about what they enjoy doing in the summer. Before working in the journals, we had a class discussion about what kind of details should be included in the drawings and I helped the students by quickly sketching some of their suggestions on the board.
We finished the day with a quiet play period on the carpet, during which students were allowed to play board games, do puzzles, or look at books. The focus of this period was getting students to sit, communicate, and cooperate with each other on a specific task.
Below are some pictures from throughout our day today.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Hello 3B families!
Today, both classes went outside for gym and practiced their soccer skills.
This morning, the AM students worked on some math mini centres, doing activities like sorting and ordering objects and subitizing puzzles, and more of the simple addition from yesterday! Mme Michelle's class also came over to practice the song that we'll be performing together tomorrow morning. The PM class discussed seasonal changes and what they enjoy doing in the summer. They then worked in their journals and drew pictures of themselves doing their favourite summer activities.
In some exciting news, our class caterpillars are getting bigger and are starting to produce silk for their cocoons!

- Finally, the AM students will be presenting the songs that we have been practicing to their grade 3 buddy classes at 8:45 on Friday morning. The assembly will be short so if you wish to come, please arrive on time, we don't you want you to miss out!
Today was a great day! To prepare for grade one, we started putting our math skills to the test by practicing subitizing and then doing a simple addition activity (see pictures below). Our hard work the last few weeks has paid off and the students did well and enjoyed the challenge! The students also had music today and enjoyed the sunny weather during recess.

Bonjour tout le monde!
Today both classes had a great time enjoying the outdoors at Research Park. We read a story about finding special rocks and then the students went out exploring to find their very own special rocks to draw in their workbooks. It was interesting to the reasons behind why the students picked each of their special rocks. Afterwards, the kids were asked to spell out their names using only natural materials and they got some free play time. Both classes got to see bunnies, ducks, ants, beetles, and a few other critters at the park.
I want to say a huge thank to all of the parent volunteers! Thank you for making today happy and sharing this adventure with us.

Bonjour tout le monde!
Tomorrow is the walking trip to Research Park from both the AM and PM classes. It is supposed be a nice day so sunblock and hats are suggested. However, it will be cool when we leave in the morning so I suggest that the AM group bring a sweater or light jacket as well.
It was great to be back at Varsity Acres today after a week away. We received our 3 class caterpillars on Thursday afternoon and everyone was very excited to meet them today. We talked about how to observe and handle the caterpillar habitats respectfully and the AM group worked with their 3rd grade buddies to draw and write about the new additions to our class. The PM group had a lively afternoon with a Fire drill having taken place. I was very proud of how the students handled the drill and they were rewarded with extra center time when we made our way back into the school.

Hi 3B families!
As of right now, we do not have enough volunteers for our June 11th walking trip to Research Park. This is a great opportunity for students to observe plant, insect, and animal life outside of the classroom. If you can donate your time so that the students can go on this adventure, it would be greatly appreciated.
The signup sheet can be found at the links below.
AM signup sheet: https://volunteersignup.org/HYEEF

Bonjour tout le monde!
The June newsletter and calendar for 3B are now up. They can be downloaded and printed by clicking the symbol in the upper righthand corner of the pdf viewer. If you have any trouble with this, please let me know.
I will be away next week from the 3rd to the 6th. I have told the students about my absence and they are familiar with the teacher who will be in for me next week. I will be checking my e-mail periodically but please allow for a 48hr response window.
If there is any change in who is picking up your child, please let me know. Additionally, if you are planning to pick up a student who normally takes the bus, please inform the office. It is important that myself and the school are aware of these changes for security purposes.
The assembly performance went so well today! I was very proud of the children for all their hard work and good behaviour. Below is a picture of both kindergarten classes performing "J'ai faim, J'ai soif" together. The theme of the month at VAS has been kindness so after the assembly, I asked each student to say something nice about another student. I then thanked each student individually for something that they do in class that models kindness. We had planned to go outside today but the smoke had other plans so the kids had some extra center time instead and we read a fun story about how to be a cat. All in all, it was another fun day and a great way to end the week!
Have an excellent weekend!

Please send students to school with hats and sun glasses if necessary. Students will begin going out for recess next week and we will also be spending more class time outside.
Today was truly a wonderful day in class. I would like you to know that both classes impressed me with their listening and good behaviour today. Today was the last day of the tennis unit in gym class, the students are excited to find out what they will be doing next. The AM class got to go outside with their buddies and look for patterns in nature and at the park. The PM class did some journalling and practiced for our performance at the assembly tomorrow.

Veseys Seeds and Bulbs have arrived at Varsity Acres School! Orders will be sorted and ready for pick-up on the stage later this week. Pick up times are as follows:
Thursday May 30th from 2-4pm.
Friday May 31st from 11:15-12:45pm.

Today was the last day of the We Are Thinkers program with Mme Harbinson. The students have learned so much from this program and we will continue to incorporate what we've learned into our daily activities. We also had music today and the students got to play different kinds of instruments! In math, we sorted bugs from biggest to smallest on the SMARTboard and used the words "grand" and "petit" to describe and compare objects.

Bonjour tout le monde!
Thank you to the volunteers who signed up yesterday for our June 11th walking trip! We still need 2 AM volunteers and 3 PM volunteers in order to go on this excursion.
Today, the students got to practice serving the ball to each other during our outdoor gym class at the VCC tennis courts. The students also got to start to playing in the garden center today. They had a lot of fun digging for bugs, planting flowers, and pretending to be gardeners and scientists!
The PM kindergarten classes have their assembly performance this Friday so we invited Mme Michelle's class to come over and practice the song that they will be singing together. The practice went really well and I think the students will do great on Friday! They PM class also had buddies today and got their chance to show off their patterning skills.
Below is a slideshow with some pictures of both classes throughout the day :)

Today was a great day in 3B. I told each class that we will soon have caterpillars in our class! Our 3rd buddies are learning about the animals and plant lifecycles and have kindly offered to give us some of the caterpillars that they are studying. After the big announcement and a discussion about how we will treat our little visitors, we read a story about the life cycle of a caterpillar. During center time, we started putting the decorations that we made for our garden center last week. It's coming along nicely and I can't wait to share some pictures of the students in action this week.
Below are pictures of students making some last minute decorations for our garden.

Bonjour tout le monde!
Today, M Trevor, Mme W and the students' 3rd grade buddies helped them upload some math work to Iris. We also practiced our alphabet sounds, learned about the letter X, danced, and had lots of fun during center time. Yesterday, we read a book in French about a cat that tried to trick a dog into playing a game called "sleep" and we decided to play the sleep game in class. Today, we played the game while we practiced one our songs; which fit perfectly because the lyrics include "when I'm tired, I sleep". We had a great day in kindergarten and I'm looking forward to next week!
I wanted to thank Mary for bringing in fresh playdough today, it was a big hit. Also, thank you to everyone who has donated something for our garden center; every little bit counts and the students are excited to set it up next week. We will continue to collect things throughout next week as well.
Below are some pictures that I took during center time and some pictures from yesterday, when we we played the sleeping game for the first time.
Have a great weekend!

Hi 3B families!
I wanted to apologize for any confusion surrounding the teddy bear picnic. Unfortunately, I was not aware that a picnic had been planned for today. I talked to both classes about the picnic today and told them that we will reschedule for a date in June so that everyone can come prepared. I will be sending out a calendar for the month of June next week with all important dates and events. Thank you for your understanding.

Bonjour!
Reminder: Tomorrow is our library day, please bring all library books to school.
Today was a great day in 3B. The students had We Are Thinkers with Mme Harbinson and had outdoor gym at the tennis courts at VCC. In craft center today, the students made lady bugs and we started decorating the classroom for our garden theme. We also continued to practice both of the songs we will be singing at the assembly. If you would like to practice with your child at home, here are the links for both songs:
J'ai faim, j'ai soif - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFAHXJwUGKI
L'arbre dans ses feuilles - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjj3bXK4nG8
The AM class practiced making patterns with their 3rd grade buddies today. Here are some of the pictures they took using our class Ipads!

Bonjour!
Over the course of the next month, the kindergarten students will be looking at how animals, insects, and plants change and grow. As part of this unit, we will be transitioning the space center into a garden center. If you have any items that could be donated for use in this center, it would be greatly appreciated. Below is a list of items that we came up with as a class. This is not a comprehensive list though so if you have other ideas, let me know!
-Small gardening gloves
-Child’s gardening tools
-Fake plants/flowers
-Fake insects
Below are some pictures of the students practicing their letter writing on the SMART board and making some bees to decorate our garden center!
A lot of students found the lowercase "h" a little tricky so this would be a good thing to practice at home :)

Bonjour! Today was a fun day in kindergarten, we did a lot of singing and played a new math game. For the game, I divided the students into four teams and they participated in a subitizing relay race, during which they quickly counted the number of dots on two dice and wrote the total on the white board before passing the marker to the player behind them. The students needed some help with their number forms but we'll get there! Below are some pictures of the afternoon class working working at their mini centers today.
I would like to thank everyone who has reached out and welcomed me this week!
Have a great long weekend!

Today in Kindergarten, we had a very busy day! We had music with Mme Zdrill and we continued the We Are Thinkers program with Mme Harbinson. They talked about personal space and how to be part of a group. We also learned about the letter Qq and used the mini whiteboards to practice our printing.
We also had a class discussion about the changes that have taken place this week and how everyone is feeling. We talked about how it can be confusing to have a new teacher but that I'm very excited to be here and get to know them. Speaking of changes, we tried something new at center time: we didn't limit the amount of students that could play at one center. I discussed this with the class beforehand and we agreed that we wanted to try it out. The students did very well at self-regulating and impressed me with their ability to share with their friends.

Bonjour tout le monde! Today we did some math and focused on sorting objects and creating patterns. We also practiced some songs and your children taught me actions that accompany the lyrics to "L'Arbre dans ses feuilles". I'm sure your children would be happy to sing you the song at home if you asked! Here is the link to the video we use to practice in class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjj3bXK4nG8.
As promised, I have created a volunteer sign-up sheet for the dates that I am looking for volunteers. I have also added a slot for play dough as it is nice to get some fresh stuff in class for the kids on a regular basis and that would be a great help to me. I may add more slots to the signup sheet if we have any projects that require an extra set of adult hands or eyes. Thank you, parents!
AM signup sheet: https://volunteersignup.org/HYEEF
PM signup sheet: https://volunteersignup.org/TJH48
If your child is doing an étoile du jour presentation and you have not yet had a chance to see them present this year, please let me know and we'll figure something out. We will be continuing with the scheduled étoile du jour presentations for the month of May and then, in preparation for Grade 1, the classes will be doing something different for June. Stay tuned!

Today was a great day in Kindergarten. Mme Harbinson came in and did a We Thinkers lesson on social problem solving. We also had phys. ed. with M. Trevor and started learning about tennis. I introduced myself to the children, so hopefully, they can tell you one or two things about me. In the next few weeks, we will be sending home some of the old work that your children have done. Thank you for taking the time to empty their backpack each night to make room.
I would also like to introduce myself to you! My name is Emily McMullen; your children will know me as Mme Emily. I am very excited to be taking over in your child's class for the remainder of the year. I was Mme Pelletier's student teacher last year and also spent time volunteering in both Kindergarten classes. I know Mme Pelletier's routines and teaching style well so I will do my best to ease this transition for you and your children. I will be keeping some things and changes others but will keep you informed along the way!
I will ask that have no classroom volunteers for the next week or two as I get settled. Following this quick transition, I want students to get to know me and feel comfortable with me as their new teacher. I will be setting up an volunteer sign up similar to the one that Mme Michelle uses in her classroom and I will post the link here as soon as it is ready to go. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Kindly,
Mme Emily
